CAXTON SWING...it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...

ABOUT THE BAND

Formed in 1999, at a time when most bands were playing either "Trad" or modern jazz, CAXTON SWING has always been drawn to the swinging, tuneful jazz of the middle period. It is a formula that has proved popular wherever the band has played.

The first half of the Twentieth Century saw the rise to prominence of a remarkable group of song writers. The classics of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Fats Waller and many others were brought to an eager public on record and at live appearances by the bands of the period. Jazz and popular song merged into a rhythmic whole, enjoyed by dancers and listeners alike..

"Swing", as the music was called, became the popular music of the 1930s and 40s. The big bands of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and others played to audiences of thousands. And of course every band had a singer. Clubs were packed night after night to hear small groups featuring the star players of the day. Today, artists such as Stacey Kent, Diana Krall, Jamie Cullum and the fine instrumentalists with whom they work are bringing mainstream jazz to new audiences.

CAXTON SWING has the classic swing front line of trumpet, alto and tenor sax with a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums, several of the members doubling on other instruments. Along with the classics from the "Golden Era", CAXTON SWING has always enjoyed playing tunes from more recent times, some written especially for the band. Vocalist Louise Hobbs, too, has introduced many new songs which have established themselves as favourites with the band. As long as it swings and has a good tune CAXTON SWING will play it!

CAXTON SWING is available for private and commercial functions, parties and weddings, pubs and clubs. If you have a function or booking in mind that you would like to discuss with the band please contact the band
